Duke's January Jitters Are More Than Just a Blip

The Cameron Crazies were buzzing, as always, when Duke hosted Pitt on January 9th. It was supposed to be a comfortable ACC win, a chance to build momentum after a solid December. Instead, we got a 79-64 beatdown from the Panthers, a game where Duke shot a dismal 37.3% from the field. That wasn't just an off night; that felt like a bellwether.

Thing is, that loss to Pitt wasn't an isolated incident. Duke's January schedule has been… bumpy. They followed up the Pitt debacle by squeaking past Georgia Tech 84-79, then got clipped by an unranked Wake Forest team, 81-76, on January 22nd. That Wake game saw the Demon Deacons shoot 50% from three-point range, knocking down 10 of their 20 attempts. For a team with Duke's talent, those kinds of defensive lapses are inexcusable.

Let's be clear: Duke is still talented. Kyle Filipowski is averaging 17.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, looking every bit the lottery pick everyone projected. Tyrese Proctor, when healthy, is a fantastic distributor, dishing out 3.8 assists a night. But the consistency just isn't there, especially away from the friendly confines of Cameron Indoor. Their road record in January was 1-2, with that lone win being a grind-it-out affair against a struggling Notre Dame squad.

**Scheyer's Second-Year Stumble**

Jon Scheyer took over a program steeped in tradition, and his first year saw them win the ACC Tournament, beating Virginia 59-49 in the final. That felt like a smooth transition, proof that the post-Coach K era would be just fine. This year, though, it feels different. The team often looks disjointed on offense, relying too heavily on individual brilliance rather than crisp ball movement. Against NC State on January 10th, they only managed 12 assists on 29 made field goals. That's not the kind of unselfish basketball you expect from a top-tier program.

And then there’s the defensive effort. Or lack thereof, sometimes. They gave up 80 points to Syracuse on January 14th, a team that isn’t exactly an offensive juggernaut. Judah Mintz, Syracuse’s guard, went off for 20 points that night, looking comfortable driving to the rim against Duke’s interior defense. You can't just outscore everyone in March. You need to get stops.

Here’s the thing: everyone expects Duke to flip a switch come tournament time. They always do, right? The talent is there, the pedigree is there. But this isn't the same Duke team that could coast through parts of the regular season and still make a deep run. The ACC is tougher, more balanced than it’s been in years. You look at teams like North Carolina and Wake Forest, playing with a level of grit Duke sometimes lacks.

My hot take? This Duke team is a serious candidate for an early exit in the NCAA Tournament. They're too reliant on Filipowski, their perimeter defense is too porous, and they haven't shown the mental toughness required to grind out wins against disciplined teams. They'll get a decent seed, sure, but I don't see them making it past the Sweet Sixteen. They just haven't earned that trust yet.

**Duke will be a #3 seed and lose in the Round of 32.**
