Published 2026-03-23 · Charlotte takes home win streak into matchup with Sacramento

The Charlotte Hornets are playing some of their best basketball right now, and frankly, it’s a welcome sight. They’ve strung together four straight wins, including a gritty 119-110 victory over the Pelicans on Monday where Terry Rozier dropped 33 points. That kind of momentum, especially heading into the final stretch of the season, can do wonders for a team still fighting for a play-in spot. They’re sitting at 37-34, holding onto that 10th seed, a half-game up on the Wizards.

But here’s the thing about confidence: it only takes you so far when you’re facing a team that, on paper, should be eating your lunch. The Sacramento Kings roll into Charlotte with a 19-53 record, dead last in the Western Conference. They just got absolutely pummeled by the Celtics, losing 126-97, and that was after giving up 153 points to the Grizzlies on Sunday. It’s been a rough stretch for Sacramento, but even bad teams can catch lightning in a bottle, especially when their opponent gets a little too comfortable.

**The Kings' Unseen Bite**

Look, nobody’s going to mistake these Kings for contenders. Tyrese Haliburton is gone, Buddy Hield is gone, and while Domantas Sabonis is a legitimate talent, averaging 18.9 points and 12.3 rebounds since coming over from Indiana, he can’t do it all. They’ve lost seven of their last eight games. Their road record is a dismal 7-28. All signs point to a Charlotte blowout, right? That’s what Vegas would tell you anyway.

But I’ve seen this movie before. The Hornets, for all their flashes of brilliance, are prone to letting inferior teams hang around. Remember that double-overtime loss to the Pistons in December, or the 116-106 defeat to the Magic in early February? Those were games they absolutely should have won, games that would have them sitting much higher than the 10th spot right now. LaMelo Ball has been fantastic, dishing out 7.3 assists per game, and Miles Bridges has taken a huge leap, scoring 20.0 points a night. But consistency, especially defensively, has been their Achilles' heel. They give up 114.7 points per game, 27th in the league. That’s not a championship number.

**Charlotte's Play-In Pressure**

This isn't just another regular season game for Charlotte. Every single possession matters now. They've got the Wizards and Knicks breathing down their neck. Dropping a game to a team like the Kings, especially at home, would be a gut punch that could derail all the good work they’ve put in over this win streak. Their offense, which ranks 5th in the league with 114.6 points per game, needs to show up from the jump and not let Sacramento find any rhythm.

Here’s my hot take: the Hornets are going to struggle more than people think against Sacramento. They'll get out to a quick lead, then relax, let the Kings hang around into the fourth quarter, and it’ll be a nail-biter. I think Charlotte pulls it out, but it won’t be the comfortable victory everyone expects. Sabonis is going to have a huge night, probably pushing 25 points and 15 boards, and make the Hornets work for every single bucket.

Ultimately, Charlotte needs this one to solidify their play-in position. They can’t afford to stumble against the league's cellar dwellers. I'm predicting a hard-fought 108-105 victory for the Hornets, but it’ll feel way too close for comfort.
